Cus D’Amato on the Difference Between a Hero and a Coward

“I tell my kids, what is the difference between a hero and a coward? What is the difference between being yellow and being brave? No difference. Only what you do. They both feel the same. They both fear dying and getting hurt. The man who is yellow refuses to face up to what he’s got to face. The hero is more disciplined and he fights those feelings off and he does what he has to do. But they both feel the same, the hero and the coward. People who watch you judge you on what you do, not how you feel.”

On Education and Physical Activity

Doing some research for a piece on fitness and brain health. Came across this quote in the book Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain:

In order for man to succeed in life, God provided him with two means, education and physical activity. Not separately, one for the soul and the other for the body, but for the two together. With these two means, man can attain perfection.

How To Succeed

I’ll tell you how to succeed, it’s very simple. Imagine the life you want to live. What does that life require from you that you aren’t doing now? Go do that. You won’t get it right at first, so repeat that 2 step process over and over until you get where you want to be. Knowing what to do is not hard. Doing it, that’s hard.
